Heartbreaker Season

Well, the Har-Ber Wildcats made it to the play-offs for the 2nd time in only 3 years of existence. We were getting better and better every week. In the 1st round, we beat North Little Rock 37-21. The next week, we headed to Cabot and beat them 21-17 in one of the most exciting games I have seen in a long time. So, we are headed to the Semi-finals......one more team standing in our way of playing in the Championship game for the 2nd year in a row. We had lost to Southside earlier this year by 1 TD, and we played terrible (5 turnovers in our first 5 possessions), so we were ready for revenge......................

The entire game, we were winning 7-0. I was very nervous the whole game, thinking we needed at least 1 more TD to give us a little cushion. Our defense has held them the whole entire game, and we are in the 4th quarter with 2 minutes left in the game. We just have to stop them and let the clock run. Southside ends up driving 70 yards and scoring. Our stands were in shock! Then, they decide to go for 2, and get it!!!! (I later find out that their defensive coordinator told the coach if it went into overtime, they would not be able to stop us again) So, there are 29 seconds left on the clock. We go down the field and on the last play with time expiring, we complete a pass to Josh McKinney on the 3 yd. line, and he's tackled about 6 inches from the endzone.

Needless to say, our players just dropped to their knees right there on the field bawling. It was the saddest thing I have ever seen! A major roller coaster of emotions! I don't think there was a dry eye in the place (on our side anyway)!!

It is so disappointing to work so hard for a year and get so close to your goal, and it all be over with...just like that. Our boys played their hearts out and these seniors will be greatly missed!!! I am so proud of the entire Wildcat team! WE WILL WIN THIS NEXT YEAR!!!!

We have a mother that is a writer, and this past week she wrote about her son's experience with this game. (He is a Senior) She wrote how she wasn't sure how her son would behave when he woke up on Saturday following this heartbreaking loss. Instead of moping around the house all day, feeling sorry for himself, he wrote this on his facebook status:

"All good things must come to an end, so that even better things can begin."

How awesome is that? Like this young man, we also need to remember that God has a plan. Jeremiah 29:11-13 "For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart."

When we fall short, we need to not only remember that God has a plan, but...we need to put our faith and trust in that plan. "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make your paths straight." Proverbs 3:5-6

This young man has it figured out.....he will go on to play college football and he wants to be a coach one day. He will make an awesome coach because he has such a strong passion for football, but more importanly, God. Unlike these football players, our "football life" keeps revolving. The players move on, but we keep preparing for the same thing year after year, only with a different set of kids. That night, we went to eat Chinese and Chris's fortune said "Your talents and hard work will pay off THIS WEEK." We just laughed thinking it's a little too late for that fortune, but I believe that although Chris is a great football coach, his bigger "TALENT" is his relationship with the young men that he coaches. He is leaving a bigger impact on their lives than just playing football. He is teaching them life lessons that they will hopefully carry with them the rest of their lives.

Although, this year has come to an end, and I am probably the biggest complainer of my husband ALWAYS being gone, I am ready to get another shot at "The Rock" but for now I will enjoy the time I have with my husband and can already see how much happier my boys (and myself :)) are now that Daddy is home more often.

Sorry for such a disappointing loss. The story about the boy and his attitude are touching. It's comforting to know there are kids out there like that. And I'm sure Chris is a blessing to all their lives. Keep up the good work!!
